“With the passing of the owner, our family inherited a very run-down marina with a bad reputation. It was decided to hire a Marina Management company that came across as being well run and highly rated.  The marina continued to fail and we were pouring thousands of dollars in it monthly to keep it going.  The DEP was watching everything we did and the State questioned whether they would even renew our lease. 

One day I walked in the door of the marina office as a man was walking out.  He suddenly turned and came back in.  He asked me if we needed an excellent marina manager and handed me a card.  He said he was a bookkeeper for CMM, owned by Scott Burt. I said I would think about it and call him back.  Our present contract was a month away from renewing.  I called and set up a time to meet with Scott, and was convinced immediately that he was our answer to our problems.  It all happened in such an unusual way.  How did that man even know I was one of the owners? I always told Scott he was God-sent! 

A short time later, I became the sole owner of Pelican’s Perch Marina and Boatyard.  Scott immediately proved himself.  He showed the DEP and the State that we really cared about our environment and our customers.  We started making money for the first time!  The marina was cleaned up, decluttered and junk removed.  Then came the serious questions from Scott.  He asked me exactly what my plans were and did I want to stay the course with having docks and a boatyard.  He told me the docks were dangerous and they had to be torn out immediately.  I couldn’t see how we could stay in business the year it would take to tear out and rebuild the docks!  Scott held firm and that is when I learned to trust Scott, no matter what happens.

I told him I wanted it all and he had my permission to start.  I would give him enough money to pay for the dock project.  After that, any money he made could go to building the marina bigger and better. I wanted a marina where people were treated like family and they were treated fairly and they could trust us to do excellent work.   The next day he gave me a full page of plans listed in the order of importance!  He hasn’t slowed down yet! 

Scott and I work well together and think a lot alike.  We have great respect for each other and I trust him completely!  He is a great teacher and expects the best from his employees. Above all, he is a great listener.  In my mind, there is no one, anywhere, who can fill his shoes!  We are growing bigger and better every day!”
